![]() It would be a stretch, in fact, to say that in 1777 Americans even recognized the Stars and Stripes as the national emblem or symbol. From today’s perspective, America’s first flag seems an afterthought, far from the archetypal symbol it would become in the 19th century, a period of territorial expansion and internal strife. The only thing we know for certain about the original flag’s symbols is that the 13 stars and 13 stripes stood for the first states. The Betsy Ross myth notwithstanding, we really don’t know who designed the American flag, why it’s red, white, and blue, or why it features stars and stripes. ![]() Nor did the resolution say anything about the shape of the stars nor their pattern in the constellation. The Congress adopted the resolution without comment, not bothering to specify the flag’s shape, proportions or the size of the canton or field of stripes. In subsequent wars, our flag fervor has grown.Ī single sentence in the Journals of the Continental Congress defines the object: “Re- solved, That the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white: that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” We don’t know which member or committee introduced the Flag Resolution of June 14, 1777, and we don’t know if the measure was debated or who voted for it and against it. Can't polish a turd though, the stink always gives it away no matter how good the turd looks.Americans first embraced their national symbol during the Civil War. It sucks sometimes to be an anime/manga enthusiast and see most of the western takes on the mediums come from people upholding some real gross politics and views of other people but are also the likeliest to catch your eye since they know best how to market themselves. One quick look at the authors' bibliography tells you all you need to know. And I mean like actual propaganda! The little I read of it was so on the nose that it leaves a sad impression rather than a laughable one. That dog whistle could be heard for miles!įor all the amazing aesthetic qualities it is nothing more than grossly nationalistic right wing propaganda. I knew something was up as soon as I turned the first page and was met with a quote from Doug TenNapel in the year 2021. And this caught my eye with the garishly colorful, american superhero anatomy-focused style and culture hybrid title. I love me some lurid manga/anime and I am always curious when western creators try their hands at replicating the mediums with western sensibilities. ![]() (I got the lenticular version.) It's hard to say no to that! It's good-natured fun, nice to look at, and feels good in your hands. You get a real sense that the authors like the character, and the whole struggle between working for someone versus working for yourself (when maybe you're not very good at that entrepreneurial stuff) is doubtless one a lot of artists (among others) can relate to. The gov't wants her to work for them, too, but she's not happy unless she's fighting on her own terms. In her inaugural adventure, disillusioned Carly is hit by some space mojo and turned into Warhen! A name that she hates, given to her by a PR company of dubious motives. What more do you want from a comic book? OK, some times you want some big-chinned Frank Miller grittiness, but not all the damn time, people! Why?Ģ) They produce and ship them quickly (at least from my perspective) Lim & Pellegrini are among my favorites in the new world of non-traditionally produced-and-distributed comics.
